The film reveals to us that it is troublesome or close to difficult to arrive at reality, simply through the variants of witnesses, for each one will have their viewpoints of things and all human memory is obfuscated by one’s own judgment, recognition and personality. An extremely fascinating scene or succession of the film is in the first place where the woodcutter is strolling through the woodland with his hatchet threw on his shoulder. The scene is made out of exceptionally arousing development of the camera, and is of span of two minutes. It has no exchange . The scene is a piece of a glimmer back; by chance the entire film is a blaze back. The scene is built in 16 shots , of which the wood shaper shows up in twelve .There are three conspicuous close ups - A current time close up of the substance of the wood shaper and past time close up of the cap of the woman assaulted , holding tight a shrubbery. ... During the fifties this was viewed as a no-no in cinematography and the cameraman, Miyagava Kazuo challenges this convention and makes awesome picture on the screen. Camera looking direct to the sun might be normal in films today. Streamlining Procurement Process

Streamlining Procurement Process The process through which any goods or services are purchased from a source external to the firm is called procurement. The purchased items should be acquired at the best possible cost and should be the closest match to the needs of company. The closest match implies the best possible quality, quantity, time, and location for the cost incurred. © Shutterstock.com | TashatuvangoIn this article, we will look at, 1) what is procurement, 2) steps in the procurement process, 3) optimizing the procurement process, 4) procurement best practices,  and 5) ensuring ethics in procurement.WHAT IS PROCUREMENTThe process of procurement is usually detailed and thorough and ranges from the preparation work involved with the demand process, the assessment of options, approvals, invoicing, payments and record keeping. There are always ethical concerns within the area of procurement. For this reasons both public and private organizations often try to create clear and defined processes to ensure that fair, open and impartial procurement can occur without the threat of any fraudulent activities.Processes in ProcurementThe procurement function is vital for the company’s ability to continue operations. For this reason, it is usually part of the company’s strategy. How necessary materials are purchased and at what cost can make the difference between a successful company and one that is not. Some of the processes that may be part of the overall procurement function include: Planning: The processes within planning may include purchase planning, determining standards, developing specifications, researching and selecting possible suppliers, performing value analyses, and determining available financing.Negotiating: During this stage, the procurement department will approach suppliers or ask for bids. A price negotiation may result from this, or a selection of the best option.Purchasing: At this point, the actual purchase will be made and the procurement function will ensure that the supplier continues to meet the terms of their contract.Post Purchase Activities: The function also controls inventory and any disposal or related activitiesSTEPS IN THE PROCUREMENT PROCESS Though the procurement process varies from company to company and depends on the nature of the business, there is a general framework that can be applied to most modern businesses. This procurement cycle consists of 6 key steps.Identify the NeedAn internal process, the company formulates strategy for the next few years and translates this into technical direction and requirements. This helps set targets for what needs to be procured along with an established criteria for acceptable quality standards and pricing.Identify the SupplierBefore suppliers can be identified, the company usually decides important things such as make or buy and whether multiple suppliers will be used or only one. Following this, work will be done on identifying who the potential suppliers are.Communicate with SuppliersWith an idea of who the possible suppliers are that may fulfill requirements, they are approached through methods such as requests for proposals, requests for quotes, and requests for information . The communication channel can be direct or through mass advertising such as a newspaper or a trade publication. There may be a need for clarification of all services expected and provided, as well as the possibility of sample testing or trial runs.NegotiateNegotiation is a vital stage of the process, with discussions on price, availability, timelines and the possibilities for customization. Service level agreements and contracts are drawn up and signed.Liaison With Suppliers At this stage, the supplier and the product or service provided is assessed, usually as it is being used. At the time of completion, contract renewal, or reorder, the performance of supplier and the material is assessed and becomes a determinant of future relationships.Logistics ManagementWorking closely with the supplier, the procurement function ensures shipment, delivery and payment schedules are completed according to the terms of the contract.Key steps of the Purchasing Process OPTIMIZING PROCUREMENT PROC ESSUnderstanding the Current State of ProcurementGiven its importance and sensitivity, the procurement process for any company needs to be streamlined, smooth and efficient. But to achieve this, there needs to be dedicated time, resources and a lot of hard work. Though it may appear simplistic, enhancing a procurement function is a complicated endeavor. The first thing to assess is where to begin from. If the two key factors of time and necessary resources are assumed to be available, the point of initiation still needs to be determined. According to consulting firm PwC, there are some important questions that need to be answered before any activity to this end can begin. These include:1. What is the maturity level of the procurement function?Informal Stage: The focus here is usually on transactions for purchase with budget and price being key metrics. Procurement may be a non-strategic element at this point and there are probably limited systems and process. The function performs as a buyer with no value addition to the organizational goals as a whole.Control Stage: At this point, some initial processes may be defined and suppliers limited to a few key ones. The role has shifted from that of a buyer to more of a negotiator.Integration Stage: By now, procurement may be handled by cross functional teams. Systems are in place to handle procurement activities and procurement is seen as a strategic function.Optimization: The teams have moved beyond cross-functional with links developed with service departments as well as RD if relevant. Supplier management programs are in place to bring a focus on continuous improvement. Systems are fully automated. Supply markets are subject to research and testing.2. What are key questions to ask about current processes?Once the current stage of the function is determined, it may be pertinent to further understand the way things are at status quo. To achieve this, several pointed questions can be asked and answered. These questio ns, when asked regularly, also ensure that the procurement function continues to operate at an optimal level. These questions can include the following:Is the procurement function working effectively with business units to support overall company strategy? Is it possible to generate reports accurately or in timely manner regarding different categories or purchases? Is there a short term plan to reduce all possible operational expenditures? Is there a system to manage suppliers in a strategic manner and to measure the value that they add to the business? Are negotiations with suppliers effective? Are there specific and separate processes in place for the purchase of both generic commonly used items and specialized ones?Is procurement involved in strategic discussions regarding investments and design? Is there a risk management program to ensure the continuation of business? It is clear that improving a procurement process is not an easy task and there are several complex steps involved in t he activity even before it formally begins. But given its criticality to business operations, these steps need to be taken in order to reduce the risk of lost business, money and time.According to the PwC report,“Without a mature, strategic procurement function to influence, control and report on organizational spending, it is impossible for a business to fully leverage its total purchasing power and create the value and service levels required from third party suppliers.”Optimizing Processes Once the current place in the procurement lifecycle is assessed, the current processes evaluated and the decision made to begin optimizing, the company can begin the actual work of streamlining the procurement function. The following basic process can be used to this end:Process Mapping: The first logical step in this activity is to map current processes. During this, the process is visually drawn out from beginning to end in the form of flow charts. The drawing begins with several boxes showing the flow of activities with decision points being highlighted. The process begins with request for proposals and ends with the consumption of the purchased itemsIdentify Improvement Areas: Once the process is laid out visually, it becomes easier to identify any redundant stages as well as possibilities for automation. The point of this exercise is to help the process run faster with better quality and less possible choke points or delays. This improvement should also help respond to customer needs faster and manage suppliers better.Decide on Automation: Once it is clearly decided where improvements and automation can be included in the process, the company can make the decision to buy or create procurement software. A procurement system helps ensure that the processes are run as they should be regardless of the people involved within.Evaluate Strategy: Different companies have different types of operations and way of work. This can help decide whether the procurement function will be stand alone and centralized, or divided among different functional areas.PROCUREMENT BEST PRACTICES Increasingly, the global economic situation has been putting pressure on companies to cut costs yet continue to produce great results. This has meant the need to go through business transformation rather than merely business improvement. Adopting industry best practices has become necessary to success where the right methods, processes and philosophies can turn the organization around.Though there are different methods used by companies considered best in class, there are some key practices that are often common to most of them. Though not a foolproof formula for success, these practices do give a systematic approach to check the effectiveness of a procurement function and the efforts to improve it.Create a Supply Chain Council: This council is made up of the head of the procurement area as well as other business unit heads and relevant company leaders. The purpose of the council should be to provide direction and ensure that the company’s strategy is supported by the procurement s trategy. The presence of this council will strengthen the role of the procurement function through the commitment of senior management. The council can help remove any obstacles within the company for the function as well as encourage cross functional communication and access to information about upcoming projects and new strategies.Align and Staff the Procurement Function: There are many possible structures that can work for a procurement function. For some companies a centralized department is the best way forward. While for others, a more decentralized approach with procurement professionals present in each department works. Still others may choose a combination of these two possibilities with perhaps strategy at a centralized level with execution at a departmental level. The right structure needs to be followed up with the right people as well. The people running the procurement process need to have excellent supply chain management skills and knowledge. But in order to move up and join management teams, there also needs to be an accompanying focus on strong communication and relationship building skills, strategic thinking and a value focused approach.Select the Right Technology: Not all procurement software will automatically improve efficiency. Rather, there needs to be an assessment of current processes first to understand where improvement is needed, and then a selection of the software that meets that requirement. The right system will allow data to be taken in and meaningful information to be retrieved.Ally with Key Suppliers: Instead of just working on a contract to contract basis, best in class companies with form strong relationships with suppliers. Through effective two way communication, both supplier and the company will work together to strengthen the relationship. This method allows for a place where problems can be resolved, work can be done on continuous improvement and value creation and helps ensure that performance objectives are met.Cr eate Collaborative Strategic Sourcing: One step beyond strategic procurement, a collaborative approach involves internal customers in the process of making decisions. With feedback channels created, there is meaningful conversation about procurement objectives and strategies which leads to lower costs, efficient processes and better responsiveness to customer needs.Look Beyond the Purchase Price: A focus on total cost ownership allows a move from just an eye on the purchase price to the complete cost of owning and using an acquired material or service. Rather than making a supplier decision based on the price quoted in a bid, it is a better idea to consider costs such as operating, storing, maintenance, training requirements, environmental impacts, transportation and the costs of disposal.Manage Contracts within the Supply Chain: Effective contract management can ensure that contract stipulations and timelines are met and followed. A central repository of all contracts should be cre ated and maintained, which can help mitigate risk, reduce costs and ensure compliance to agreed terms. It can also help create a history of spend and relationship with particular suppliers.Establish Control Levels and Minimize Risk: Policies and procedures for procurement need to have structure and a sequence. They also need to be reviewed and updated regularly to remain relevant and effective. There is a stronger chance of the processes being followed if they are realistic and easy to understand. The right balance of complexity and control needs to be created when looking at these policies and processes. There should be no bottlenecks and there should be a smooth running process with the right controls to deter theft, fraud, and other issues.Risk mitigation is an important aspect of procurement that needs to be a part of the policies and controls. The important aspects here are to identify all risks, determine the probability of a risk occurring, assess the cost impact of the risk on the procurement activity and prioritize for prevention and monitoring.ENSURING ETHICS IN PROCUREMENT The procurement function is often affected by ethical violation and scandals. To reduce the risk of these events, a company can take some steps to strengthen the ethical side of its procurement function and prevent ethical lapses.Create an Ethics Policy: The presence or written policies highlighting what is acceptable and ethical by the top management are necessary to help counter any possible ethical issues that arise.Conduct Ethics Trainings: It is not a good idea to assume that the ethics policies are clearly understood by all employees automatically. Rather it is a good idea to hold information and training sessions to ensure that everyone is on the same page about acceptable behavior and actionsAppoint an Ethical Regulator: Appointing a person from the organization that employees can communicate in confidence about any potential ethical concerns. The presence of this person can be a balancing force between stronger senior employees and other employees.Management Review of Proces ses: The procurement processes should be subject to review by management to ensure that no violations occurAudits: Regular audits should be performed on procurement processes and activities to ensure ethical compliance. The possibility of audits, conducted thoroughly and regularly can act as a deterrent to any potential ethical problem. The Importance of Ethics

The challenge for managers today is to keep the staff motivated and performing well in the workplace. The goal of most companies is to benefit from positive employee behavior in the workplace by promote a win-win situation for both the company and workers. 2.4.1Employee Motivation Employee Performance fundamentally depend on many factors like performance appraisals, employee motivation, Employee satisfaction, compensation, Training and development, job security and other, but the area of study is focused only on employee motivation as this factor highly influence the performance of employees. Employee motivation is one of the policies of managers to increase effectual job management amongst employees in organizations (Shadare et al, 2009). Motivation formulates an organization more successful because provoked employees are constantly looking for improved practices to do a work, so it is essential for organizations to persuade motivation of their employees (Kalimullah et al, 2010). 2.4.2Factors affecting Employees Motivation No one works for free, nor should they. Employees want to earn reasonable salary and payment, and employees desire their workers to feel that is what they are getting (Houran. J) .To use salaries as a motivator effectively, managers must consider salary structures which should include importance organization attach to each job, payment according to performance, personal or special allowances, fringe benefits, pensions and so on (Adeyinka et al, 2007). Leadership is about getting things done the right way, to do that you need people to follow you, you need to have them trust you. And if you want them to trust you and do things for you and the organization, they need to be motivated (Baldoni.J, 2005). Empowerment provides benefits to organizations and makes sense of belonging and pride in the workforce. In fact, it builds a Win Win connection among organizations and employees; which is considered an ideal environment in numerous organizations and their employees.. Empowered em ployees focus their job and work-life with additional importance and this leads to constant progress in coordination and work procedures. 2.5Copies of Research Instruments (See Appendix 1 and 2) 2.6Strenghts and Limitation Budget and cost limitation of the research process. Including /time constraints The survey is subjected to the bias and prejudices of the respondents. Hence 100% accuracy cant be assured. Even though this research is limited to Countdown Barrys Point Takapuna, the findings should allow us to gain an understanding of the supermarket trends in all its branches and other metropolitan cities of New Zealand as the cultural influence may be quite similar. 2.7 Management Theory 2.7.1Theory X and Y Douglas McGregors famous classification of theory X versus theory Y is applicable for the leadership approaches. When everyone is committed to the common goals, supervisors act as teachers, consult and only rarely act as authoritative bosses. If the assumption is along with the line of Theory X the leadership style will be highly different compared to the situation where leaders act according to the Theory Y. Managers that believe in Theory X tend to control their workers. Those managers think that people are efficient only as long as their work process is observed. Thus the best managing style is to tell workers exactly what they must do and closely control them to get everything done in time and with good quality. 2.7.2 Job Design One of the main reasons organizations should pay attention to the concept of job design is that it helps to function and produce better (Rush 1971, 255). Various forms of job design. Job rotation, allows an employee to work in different departments or jobs in an organization to gain better insight into operations. The method can be suitable when employees are involved in performing boring, repetitive tasks to give them a greater variety of tasks. It allows to increase skills and knowledge about other jobs. Job enrichment, allows the employee to take on some responsibilities normally assigned to management. It means that the job provides greater responsibility, recognition and opportunities for growth. There is a risk that too much responsibility and autonomy in the planning and control aspects of the job would be transferred to the employee. 2.7.3 Motivation of employee Intrinsic motivation can be described as the process of motivation by work itself in so far as it satisfies the personal needs of the employee. Intrinsic motivation is self-generated and it is thought that people seek for a job they think will most satisfy their needs. The factors affecting intrinsic motivation include for example responsibility, freedom to act, courage to use and develop persons own skills, interesting tasks and opportunities for advancement. Extrinsic motivation is the amount of effort other people give to the person to motivate them. Intrinsic motivators tend to have a longer effect as they are inherent and not imposed from outside. The effect of money as a motivator is discussed later in this thesis. (Armstrong 2007,60) As the needs of individuals differ a lot, it is important to concentrate carefully on the attachment of goals and incentives given when goals are accomplished. 2.7.4 Herzberg Motivation/Hygiene theory Herzbergs motivation/hygiene theory is also known as the two-factor theory. Herzberg started the study job satisfaction in the 1950s in Pittsburg. The basis of Herzbergs work is in the Maslows Hierarchy of Needs. He started with the idea that what causes the job satisfaction are the opposite of those things that cause job dissatisfaction. The result Herzberg theory found out that what makes people happy is what they do or the way theyre utilized and what makes people unhappy is the way theyre treated. Hygiene factors, are those that the employee expects to be in good condition. As motivators are those that in present cause satisfaction, hygiene factors are those that dont cause satisfaction but if they are lacking, it causes job dissatisfaction. Employees must feel that their job is as secured as it is possible in the current economical situation. (Ellis 2005, 83). The main finding of Herzberg is that the opposite of satisfaction is not dissatisfaction but no satisfaction. 3.1 Results and Discussion There are 11 employees in Countdown Deli Department Takapuna Branch. Total of 11 staff or employees answered the Employee Satisfaction Survey. The background information was introduced in terms of Gender, Work Status, Age and Length of service .. etc. However since the number of respondents was quite low, the answers were introduced by frequencies ,( See Apendix for the Graph) In this section for the Demographic of the Deli Department only tables are presented . The task is to optimize the working environment ,satisfaction and motivation of employees. The main purpose of this project is to measure the employee satisfaction .The research question was: what is the level of employee satisfaction in the company. The purpose of this kind of research is to find out which factors could be improved and how to make employees enjoy their work every day. 3.3 Data analysed and interpreted / Management Theory 3.3.1Leadership On the basis of the questionnaire and the results, it is possible to analyse the situation in the target organization. It is very important for both manager of the Deli department as well as the employees that the relationship between them is good and open. It is good as it appears in the investigation that majority of the staff has a good relationship with the manager. The relationship of both is very essential when its about job satisfaction and work motivation is concerned. The employees Countdown Deli Department think that the manager shows attention towards the work they do and it is very easy to communicate with the manager . In the work place where communication is easy, the power distance is usually smaller and also employees feel appreciated at work. This is also true if the manager is interested in the ideas and thoughts the employees have, and based on the results, has a satisfying result. The employees are quite satisfied with the amount of information they get fr om the manager about the job and tasks the employees are expected to do. Same is true in the case of limited amount of information got about the situation of the company. The employees are fairly satisfied with the amount of information they get. The amount of constructive feedback is one of the most important aspects when thinking about the employees work satisfaction. Constructive feedback is not necessarily positive. It can also be negative; the way the feedback is given is most essential. Without constructive feedback the employees cant develop their ways of working. But majority is neutral either way staff may or may not be satisfied. The employees majority is neutral and satisfied with the appreciation the direct manager shows towards the work they do and they think the boss is quite aware of the abilities of the worker. The style of boss directions is important as the employees might easily find the style offensive or underestimating. This would have an effect on the job satisfaction. The employees find the style of boss directions appropriate. The employees also want to have support from the manager. It is important to know that the manager supports the worker in any situation that might arise. The employees defined this situation fairly good. They are also very satisfied with the time their department managers takes to listen to the employees concerns and support reasonable suggestions. The only thing the employees are not satisfied with is the amount of knowledge the manager has regarding the different aspects of the job responsibilities. It is essential that the manager knows all the different responsibilities of the job so that the manager can provide the employees with support and knowledge regarding the job. It is also important for the manager to know what it is like to do the tasks the employees are expected to complete in certain quality and within a certain time limit . 3.3.2 Motivation The employees of the Deli department dont feel satisfied about enjoying working everyday and performing at their best. They also say it dont like the idea to come to work every day, if only I got another job. According to the results the workers dont feel so optimistic about the future success with the company . Work is supposed to fulfill the employees basic needs. In average most of the employees are feeling fairly satisfied with the fulfillment of their basic needs by work. . Employees want to be appreciated at work. Appreciation at work is one factor that caused job satisfaction. In the employees think that they are not well appreciated at workplace. They are not quite satisfied with the appreciation got from manager. According to Herzberg appreciation and awareness of the boss is very important to employees. 3.3.3 Wages Compensation is the maximum motivator. Employees are not so satisfied with the compensation provided employees are very satisfied with the job security. The employees think that their job place is secured, which has an effect on the motivation.. They are not quite satisfied with the training and development. 3.3.4 Benefits Benefits is another form of the rewards systems that makes a motivating factor for the employees. It might add satisfaction if the salary is not so high. Workers of the company shows not satisfied health benefits; extra vacation; day off; break time; flexibility in working hours provided. There is a need for more improvement for benefits are not available to all the employees. 3.4 List of Possible Solutions and Consequences If the management uses enough time to explain the tasks to their employees, it will reduce the amount of frustration the employees have and that way increase productivity. With reasonable training and retraining the employees have the latest information regarding the different aspects of the work, and this can help them to avoid frustration as well as accidents and other sicknesses caused by the job. Proper training is the key to getting better performance. Remember that every employee needs company-specific training in the least. So, try to find out whats the problem thats causing the incompetence. Once you have singled it out, you can solve it. Inability to work well by some employees has always been an issue at every workplace. As these employees dont do their work properly, there is always a need to supervise or look into their work a second time, which can be quite time-consuming in crunch situations. So, how do we deal with such incompetent employees When a person is happy with the job, that he/she will do it most efficiently and effectively. Make sure that the performers get special mention for their work. Ensure that other employees (the ones who are performing at par with each other every month) also get appreciation for their work. One needs to ensure that the non-performing employees are encouraged and motivated to work. Motivation in the workplace should be done in the right way. Have regular feedback sessions with all the employees. Also ensure that they are encouraged to talk without any fear. This is so that you get an honest feedback. Some work for fulfillment, while others work out of love and passion for their work. While working, recognition and acknowledgement play a vital role in boosting employee morale, without which, work productivity could suffer. Also constant criticism would not go down well with employees. Criticism and lack of recognition would eventually make employees lose interest in their work. 3.5 Evidence of original research Research is based on the questionnaire (See Appendix 2) 4 Conclusion and Recommendation 4.1Conclusion: 4.1.1 Leadership To summarize the conclusion under leadership in Countdown deli department relationship of your department manager find it satisfactory. The Divorce Cycle The Children Of Divorce - 986 Words

There are many interesting topics and questions to research in sociology. I am most interested in the topic: consequences in divorce. Being a child of divorced parents is something I have always thought about and how it will effect me later in life with my relationships. I wonder if I am more likely to have a divorce as well because my parents had one. I have found a couple articles that talk about this topic one titled, Understanding the Divorce Cycle: The Children of Divorce in their own Marriages and the another titled, Effects of Parental Divorce on Marital Commitment and Confidence. Each article talks about the research that was done and the results they got from it. My research question that I would research is, â€Å"What are the rates of divorce of those who have divorced parents in Scott county Iowa?† I will discuss each articles method of study they used and the results. In describing the sentiments of Union and Confederate soldiers we can use some examples that are in letters sent home by the soldiers. One Kentucky confederate wrote, â€Å"I choose to fig ht for southern rights and southern liberty against the vandals of the North who were determined to destroy slavery†[vi]. Another opinion by a Wisconsin Union soldier states his reasons for fighting in the war, â€Å" I have no heart in this war if the slaves cannot go free†[vii]Both the North and the South believed to be fighting to preserve the society that was prevalent in the respective regions of the United States. The South was trying to protect the institution of slavery and their society. The North, at the start of the war, only had the intention to overcome the succession, but they later realized that it could only do this by destroying slavery[viii]. When it became apparent to the soldiers on the battlefield that the war would not end quickly, the tone of enthusiasm changed. An example of the change in attitude can be obtained from the following passage that was written by the Union soldier Jno R. McClure to his sister in 1862 â€Å"I will tell you what I thi nk and that is the north will never whip the south as long as there is a man left in the south. They fight like wild devles. Symptoms of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Free Essays

Medical history has been filled with an array of diseases and illnesses, ranging from the common cold to deadly killers. Some are easily treatable and others can be terminal, but some of the worst are those that still remain without a cure; one such disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a degenerative disease affecting the human nervous system. We will write a custom essay sample on Symptoms of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or any similar topic only for you Order Now It is a deadly disease that cripples and kills its victims due to a breakdown in the body’s motor neurons. Motor neurons are nerve cells in the brainstem and spinal cord that control muscle contractions. In ALS, these neurons deteriorate to a point that all movement, including breathing, halts. Muscle weakness first develops in the muscles of body parts distant from the brain, such as the hands, and subsequently spreads through other muscle groups closer to the brain. Such early symptoms as this, however, can hardly be noticed. Early symptoms of ALS are very slight and often overlooked. They begin as simple things, such as tripping or dropping things. Twitching or cramping of muscles and abnormal fatigue of the arms and legs may soon follow, causing difficulty in daily activities, such as walking or dressing. In more advanced stages, however, shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing and swallowing ensue, until the body is completely taken over by the disease. Intellect, eye motion, bladder function, and sensation are the only abilities spared. Where and how this deadly disease originated is unknown, but it was first identified in 1869, by the noted French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. ALS is not contagious, but research is still vague on the cause of the disease. Today, there are three recognized forms of ALS: genetic, sporadic, and Guamanian. The genetic form of ALS appears to be inherited or passed down within a family, and about ten percent of ALS patients have a family history of the disease. An abnormal gene has been located in about half these families, but the cause of the remaining half is still unknown. The next, most common form, is sporadic ALS. These patients have no family history of disease, and the cause of their coming down with ALS is a mystery. Finally, is Guamanian ALS, called this because a high percentage of cases occur in the Pacific Islands near Guam. One major reason ALS is such a frightening disease is because no cure has been established. Although no effective treatment has been developed, a number of drug trials have been conducted, and there are some devices designed to help ALS patients maintain independence as well as safety as the disease progresses. These devices include ankle or foot braces, cervical collars, and reclining chairs. Since there is no cure, however, the primary treatment is for management of symptoms. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is also a difficult disease to diagnose, primarily because no one test can definitely establish if the disease is present. A diagnosis includes most, if not all, of the following procedures: electrodiagnostic tests, blood and urinary study, thyroid and parathyroid hormone levels, spinal tap and imaging, and muscular or nerve biopsy. Most who develop ALS are between the ages of forty and seventy years of age, although cases have been reported of victims in their twenties and thirties. It was once thought to be a rare disease, but studies have shown that about 5,000 people in the United States are newly-diagnosed with ALS each year–about 13 new cases a day! It isn estimated that about 100,000 people who are apparently well in the country today will die with ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is also popularly known as Lou Gehrig disease. Lou Gehrig was a famous baseball player in the 1930’s for the New York Yankees. Once known as baseball’s â€Å"Ironman†, Lou Gehrig was truly a sports legend. His promising career came to a screeching halt, however, when he was diagnosed with ALS. The disease not only took away his career in baseball, but his life; Lou Gehrig died at the young age of thirty-eight. In conclusion, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a deadly and frightening disease; its victims cannot be saved. Someday, hopefully, a cure will be developed, and the suffering this disease is causing will be stopped. How to cite Symptoms of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Essay examples

Multiple sclerosis Persuasive Essay Example For Students

Multiple sclerosis Persuasive Essay Multiple Sclerosis, MS for short, effects approximately 5 in 10,000 people, and my step-mom Kathy happens to be one of the unlucky few (Rogner 5). MS is a disease that strikes the central nervous system, which consists of the brain and spinal chord. These two organs control the movement and function of the entire body. Inside the body of a person with MS the tube that sends signals throughout the body is either partially of fully blocked, leaving the victim with for starters, impaired vision, strength, and coordination (5). There are a couple of different types of MS, which include relapsing-remitting, primary-progressive, secondary-progressive, and primary relapsing (Kalb 5). The type that my step mom has is primary-progressive, which is considered the worst type of MS. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society a person with primary-progressive MS is â€Å"characterized by a gradual but steady progression of disability from the onset, with no obvious plateaus or remissio ns, or only occasional plateaus and minor, temporary improvements.†In short this means that the symptoms Kathy is experiencing such as falling down due to a lack of coordination, tiredness, numbness, and bladder problems are only going to get worse. But possibly the worst symptom of all are mental problems such as a loss of self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. The most obvious effect that MS has on a person is a loss of coordination and balance; approximately 77 percent of people afflicted with MS experience this symptom (3). When my family went to the Grand Canyon for a vacation we had no idea that Kathy was afflicted with multiple sclerosis. We took a mule ride down to the bottom of the canyon, and when we reached our destination there was a ranch where we stayed the night. As you might expect it was very warm at the bottom of the canyon in the middle of the summer, over 100 degrees to be exact, so our family decided to go swimming in the river. On the walk down to the water, there was a metal grate that held rocks in place on the embankment, and as Kathy and my Dad walked down this grate Kathy slipped and tore up her foot on the metal. This was just a minor incident, but it was one of the first signs that Kathy could be having a problem. Now, about two years later Kathy walks with a cane, especially when she is in crowds of people, so she can eliminate having to hold on to strangers when she is about to fall over; she also has a constant feeling of weaknesses, described only by her as â€Å"my melting muscles† (Doyle). Sometimes on bike rides because her balance is so bad the wind will actually tip her over, and a task as simple as taking our dog for a walk has now become a chore. After a fifteen minute walk, which for the most part includes at least five falls, or close calls, Kathy has to lay down for at least a half hour just to get her strength back. To help keep the symptoms of MS down to a minimum Kathy has been prescribed a drug ca lled abonex. In order to administer abonex, Kathy has to give herself a shot once a week. The side effects of this shot are severe flue like symptoms for at least twelve hours after the shot has been taken. So once a week Kathy spends almost the entire day in bed, which not only makes her feel bad physically, but also emotionally. Kathy is the type of person who likes to get out and do things. Before she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis she would run five miles a day, just to get exercise, and when her legs didn’t feel like running the entire five miles, before she would go to work she could be found on our Nordic Track getting her exercise for the day. Kathy has now gone from working sixty hours a week to forty, not including the almost weekly event of calling in and telling her boss that she is just to tired to come into work (Doyle). At one point Kathy was the top accountant at Hackley Hospital, now because she can’t work as much, or as efficiently, she has bec ome â€Å"just another accountant† (Doyle). This fact alone has really hurt her self esteem, just imagine being at the top of a company, and because of something you have no control over to be demoted back to where you started how ever many years ago. .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad , .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad .postImageUrl , .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad , .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad:hover , .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad:visited , .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad:active { border:0!important; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad:active , .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u99d1749e07271f92d579db4339c5a9ad:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Essay on Analysis Of The Book ' Secret Life Of Bees ' Essay As I have illustrated, multiple sclerosis can be very damaging to a person both physically and mentally.
